How To Write A Melody

Nothing will improve your drumming more than if you play along to live music. As that progresses I'll start scatting over it, just looking for the texture of how lyrics might rest on top of it. If it seems to be building up nicely, I'll quickly do a scratch recording of it, along with a vocal description of key, time, chord progression… etc.

Believe it or not, most non-music-making people still don't quite understand what it is, which is totally ok. Here's a brief explanation of what "making beats" means: Think of it like a "one man band". Double up the bass part with other sounds, like marcato strings, synth strings or even a bright trance-type lead sound.

Notice the top note of the first chord: this is on the second line above the bass clef and represents E, which you can determine by counting spaces and lines up from the top line of the bass clef (which is A). This E could also be notated as the bottom line of the treble clef.

The files linked in the third column of audio contain the same chords — generated with MySong — fed through Band-in-a-Box , a commercial software package that assembles pre-recorded sequences of instrmental styles' to generate audio for a set of chords.

As a non-instrument playing, mostly beat oriented, casual user I have to say Hookpad is simply the best melody composing tool I have tried for generating original midi - and that includes about every single iPad App and harmony VST out there. Create a short rhythmic theme, then change it. The theme may be a lil uzi vert type beat 2019 rhythm running through your head, part of a song, a drum beat, etc.
